The Faculty of Arts at The University of British Columbia (UBC) – Vancouver campus invites applications for the position of the Head of the Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies (CENES), with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2020. The administrative appointment as Head is typically for an initial five-year term, with the possibility of reappointment for a second term. We expect that the successful candidate will be appointable at a senior professorial rank. CENES offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate programs, including MA and PhD in German Studies, BA in German and Modern European Studies, and Minors in German, Russian and Scandinavian Studies.
We seek applicants who have a PhD degree, a distinguished record of research publications and scholarly activity commensurate with appointment at the rank of Professor (or Associate Professor at a senior level may be considered). The area of specialization in the field of German Studies is open, but a proven interest in Scandinavian or Nordic Studies will be an asset.
The successful candidate will have an excellent record of high quality undergraduate and graduate teaching, and graduate supervision, and have attained wide recognition, nationally and internationally, in the field(s) of their scholarly interest. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate vision and creativity and to foster a collaborative, respectful, and inclusive environment for students, staff, faculty, and community partners. Demonstrated administrative skills and experience are a requirement, and prior involvement in leadership will be considered an asset.
